2003 Draft Predictions (1st Round)

Written February 2003
Owner (Pick)John's GuessJack's GuessActual Player Chosen
Rob Gordon (1)Ray DurhamJunior SpiveyEdgar Renteria
Jack's Spin: Stacked with good, young pitching, I'm betting Rob will grab a hitter and Spivey has great upside with outstanding production in his first year.
John's Spin: White Sox fan takes best middle infielder available, Ray Durham. Should continue to score a lot of runs.

Owner (Pick)John's GuessJack's GuessActual Player Chosen
Zach Williams (2)Preston WilsonEric HinskePreston Wilson
Jack's Spin: Zach's keeper list is strong in the outfield and starting pitching. Hinske could be a top 5 third baseman this year.
John's Spin: Zach already has Damon, but Preston has Coors... a lesser man could hit 40 there... how many will Wilson wind up with?

Owner (Pick)John's GuessJack's GuessActual Player Chosen
Aneet Ahulwalia (3)Hideki MatsuiJose ContrerasHideki Matsui
Jack's Spin: Well balanced keeper list allows Aneet to take a shot at the Cuban missle...
John's Spin: Too much potential, plus he's on the Yankees. He'll hit at least 20 HR's, .300 and reach the playoffs.

Owner (Pick)John's GuessJack's GuessActual Player Chosen
Il-Sun Park (4)Ken Griffey Jr.Roger ClemensEric Hinske
Jack's Spin: Can't pass up 20 win potential here.
John's Spin: Can he stay healthy? If he can play 155 games, watch him rebound in a big way and put up huge numbers. If healthy, could put up the best numbers of anyone available.

Owner (Pick)John's GuessJack's GuessActual Player Chosen
Jason Sarakatsannis (5)JD DrewHideki MatsuiKen Griffey Jr.
Jack's Spin: Godzilla goes early.
John's Spin: Again, can he stay healthy? He puts up huge numbers when healthy, its hard to pass on this guy. If healthy for an entire season he could hit .320, 30/100.

Owner (Pick)John's GuessJack's GuessActual Player Chosen
Raju Patel (6)Darrin ErstadAaron BooneRay Durham
Jack's Spin: Raju loves having stud hitters. If Boone raises his average 30 points, that's exactly what he'll be.
John's Spin: With all of his mashers, Raju needs a guy who will get hits and score runs. Why not Darrin Erstad? Raju doesn't need to take chances to compete. With his keepers, a solid surrounding staff should lead him back into contention for a third straight year.

Owner (Pick)John's GuessJack's GuessActual Player Chosen
Mike Trakan (7)Carlos LeeJason SchmidtJacque Jones
Jack's Spin: Best pitcher on the board that could take another step forward.
John's Spin: Could this be the year Carlos breaks out and hits .300, 30/100? He's in a great lineup and should have a ton of RBI chances. He'll be 27 this year, so he should be entering his prime.

Owner (Pick)John's GuessJack's GuessActual Player Chosen
Mike Wenz (8)Eurbiel DurazoVicente PadillaDavid Eckstein
Jack's Spin: Another pitching hungry team gets a solid performer with plenty of upside.
John's Spin: This guy is a slugging machine... if he could only play 162! Billy Beane gets his man, and we all get to see what this guy can do on a daily basis. He'll be an RBI machine in the years to come, although he might get off to a slow start as he adjusts to a new league. I say that adjustment won't take long.

Owner (Pick)John's GuessJack's GuessActual Player Chosen
Jack Kerwin (9)Junior SpiveyEdgar RenteriaAaron Boone
Jack's Spin: Break out year last year, can he continue to improve? All I know is I desperately need an infielder!
John's Spin: Jack loves those guys who had career years the previous year. That's why he'll take Wakefield in the next round. Seriously though, this guy has hit everywhere he's been... I say he'll never hit 16 homers again (look at his minor league HR totals), but he could keep his average at .300.

Owner (Pick)John's GuessJack's GuessActual Player Chosen
Brian Hogan (10)Derrek LeeDerrek LeeDerrek Lee
Jack's Spin: Impressive numbers at first with the opportunity to do more damage with Pudge in the mix.
John's Spin: Manager Jeff Torborg says he'll hit 40 HRs this year. He very well may... I say he is this year's Cliff Floyd--without the late season drop-off. He's 27 and has had a string of consistent seasons.

Owner (Pick)John's GuessJack's GuessActual Player Chosen
Manoj Khanna (11)Eric HinskeJD DrewRafael Furcal
Jack's Spin: Somebody will bet he'll stay healthy.
John's Spin: Manoj would love to pair Hinske with Josh Phelps and see the two mash together for his team. While a viable candidate for a sophomore slump, this guy could be Manoj's third sacker for a while.

Owner (Pick)John's GuessJack's GuessActual Player Chosen
Kevin Bass (12)Jose HernandezEdgardo AlfonsoMark Teixeira
Jack's Spin: No infielders and all outfielders make Kevin go something, something...
John's Spin: Strikeouts aside, this guy had a good year on a bad team. This year, he should have a great year on a bad team. Coors has been shown to help hitters cut down on their strikeouts... and we all know about the power surge a player also receives. I say he goes .275 30-80 for his new team.

Owner (Pick)John's GuessJack's GuessActual Player Chosen
Marty Bass (13)Jose ContrerasRuss OrtizJason Kendall
Jack's Spin: Only one starter kept, Ortiz is too good to pass up.
John's Spin: Marty needs a stud to back up Tim Hudson. If Contreras falls this far, Marty will scoop him up. He won't stay in the bullpen long and he's far from being a rookie. Look for him to show great numbers across the board. His wins will depend on when he gets into the starting rotation.

Owner (Pick)John's GuessJack's GuessActual Player Chosen
John Strougal (14)Shannon StewartJohn OlerudCarlos Lee
Jack's Spin: Had to let him go but will pick him up in a heartbeat...
John's Spin: Hmmm... this guy needs a lot of help. Kendall is out there... yeah, learned that lesson two years ago. Olerud? A possibility... he IS getting old and plays in a pitchers park, though. Since Carlos Lee is projected to go already, let's go with another left fielder... Shannon Stewart. While unspectacular, he's good for a .300 average, some steals and a little pop. Plus, Strougal loves guys named Shannon (Shannon Hoon).

Owner (Pick)John's GuessJack's GuessActual Player Chosen
Phil Sommerfeld (15)Jason SchmidtHideo NomoJunior Spivey
Jack's Spin: Outstanding production especially at a pitchers park, Nomo won't last long...
John's Spin: Is Randy Wolf a guy you can sit back and call your number 1? I think he is a stud, but lets put down Phil as going with another starter. Jason Schmidt will get you a ton of k's. Playing in a pitchers park doesn't hurt as well. It seems every pitcher is an injury risk... OK, not really, but this guy's got A-stuff. It's hard to pass on that.
